The Role of Software in Advanced Steering - The Safety Net is "Always On"
Software plays an increasingly important role in the safety and performance of our advanced motion control systems such as our Steer-by-Wire (SbW) and other advanced electric power steering (EPS) systems like High Availability EPS. These systems are key gateway systems for advanced safety and performance functions within traditional and varying levels of automated driving (AD).
In addition to hardware redundancies, our software is built for simultaneous, multi-path processing to further enhance the safety net as the industry moves toward varying levels of automation. Our hardware and software are developed concurrently and work together to connect the driver with the road – taking into account driving dynamics and the operating environment to maximize safety.
OEM demand for smart software solutions continues to grow exponentially—especially in these safety-critical steering applications. As we continue to add functionality and safety features in our steering systems—the lines of code required is astounding.
A Key to Cyber Security
While our customers incorporate cyber security at the vehicle level, we further enhance safety by integrating multi-layer cyber security at the steering system level for maximum protection. Our cyber security technologies consist of specifically designed hardware modules on the semi-conductor level, as well as a multi-layered cryptographic software structure that identifies and authorizes information and command flow between the steering system and other in-vehicle or external controllers.
As vehicles adopt advanced electronics to enable AD, internet connectivity and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, cyber-secure steering technologies become ever more critical.
