Unlocking the Power of the Software-Defined Chassis

October 22, 2025

At Nexteer, we are turning motion control into market advantage through our Motion-by-WireTM portfolio. By replacing physical components with software-based connections, our by-wire technologies such as Steer-by-Wire, Rear-Wheel Steering, and Brake-by-Wire, along with our MotionIQ™ Software deliver a new era of safety, performance and comfort for traditional and automated driving.

Nexteer Unlocks Market Advantage through By-Wire Chassis Control
Motion-by-Wire is more than a technology portfolio. It is the core of the software-defined chassis. By combining deep in-house expertise in software design, development, testing and validation with a legacy of innovation, Nexteer is redefining mobility.

Software-based solutions enable greater standardization in vehicle hardware while empowering OEMs to achieve high levels of customization. As more OEMs adopt by-wire technologies into their product planning, they will be able to brand and differentiate their driving experiences like never before.

Our Motion-by-Wire solutions enable OEMs to achieve greater standardization, faster development cycles, and distinctive brand-defining driving experiences – all while delivering smarter, safer and more sustainable mobility for the road ahead.

Steer-by-Wire: REVOLUTIONIZE the “Behind the Wheel” Experience
Steer-by-Wire is the ONLY single steering system that applies to all vehicle segments, propulsion types, right- and left-hand drive and ADAS levels 0 through 5. By replacing the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and roadwheels with algorithms, electronics and actuators, OEMs decrease costs, accelerate time to market and streamline assembly.

  • Fewer components, lower costs: Replacing the intermediate shaft with software that creates a variable steering ratio drastically reduces part numbers and simplifies steering configurations.
  • Standardization and speed to market: One steering system for all vehicles reduces design and validation complexity and gets new vehicles to market faster.
  • Faster assembly and more space: With fewer hardware components, SbW can streamline assembly and alignment while opening under hood space for other technology.
  • Next-level Experiences:
    • Connection to the road: Drivers experience effortless maneuverability, enhanced stability and control and a wide range of safety and performance features – from Automatic Emergency Steering to highly tuned steering feel (luxury, sporty, truck-feel, etc.).
    • New Cockpit & Steering Interface Possibilities: Our NEW Direct Drive SbW Hand Wheel Actuator features compact, lightweight, low- or high-mount designs, but even more exciting is that this breakthrough allows the steering interface to be located almost anywhere in the cabin and opens the door to innovative stow and interior concepts.

Rear-Wheel Steering: Optimize Handling
Rear-Wheel Steering offers drivers more control, comfort and confidence by allowing vehicles’ rear wheels to turn in addition to front wheels. This enhanced maneuverability is especially relevant as cities become more crowded, heavier, long-wheel base vehicles grow in popularity, and drivers are increasingly using trailering, towing and hitching.

  • Enhanced maneuverability and stability: Allowing rear wheels to turn up to 12 degrees helps with maneuverability at low speeds and stability at high speeds. This is especially important for larger or heavier vehicles.
  • Simplified integration: Our system is engineered for cost-effectiveness, lightweighting and seamless integration with all vehicle types.
  • A legacy of RWS development: We pioneered RWS mass production in the 2000s with Quadrasteer™ and continue to build on our legacy with next generation solutions.

Electro-Mechanical Braking: Elevate Safety and Comfort
In our Electro-Mechanical Braking system, we’ve traded traditional hydraulics and mechanical links for smart electronic control. The resulting modular, precision-tuned digital braking brings next-generation stopping power. Actuators at each wheel provide greater stability, safety and comfort, as well as shorter stopping distances.

  • Immediate response: EMB creates a braking experience that is faster, smoother and smarter, boosting stability and cutting stopping distances.
  • Efficiency and lightweighting: With no hydraulic fluids and reduced mechanical losses, EMB reduces weight and improves EV range and fuel efficiency. It also minimizes wear and reduces brake dust, emissions and brake fluid disposal concerns.
  • Future-proofed architecture: Without traditional brake lines, EMB enables greater design freedom and supports software-defined vehicle architecture. It also opens the door to next-generation driver- assist features and automated driving systems.

MotionIQ™ Software Suite: Proven Algorithms, Intelligent Motion Control
As the software-defined chassis takes center stage, OEMs, suppliers and technology companies have partnered to co-develop the tools central to today’s driving experience. OEMs want greater ownership of software that differentiates their brands. Our MotionIQ™ suite offers intelligent motion control software for safer, superior driving experiences across three product groups.

  • Transformed safety, performance and driving comfort: MotionIQ/Control™ creates dynamic, customized driving experiences. Some of these vehicle dynamics functions include Steer-by-Brake, Hands-Off Detection, Quiet Wheel™ Steering and Road Surface Detection.
  • Predictive maintenance: MotionIQ/Health™ monitors the health of steering, other chassis systems, and tires. By measuring electrical and mechanical performance under actual driving conditions, the software can predict issues before they occur, allowing for convenient maintenance and reduced diagnostic costs.
  • Fast, flexible software development: MotionIQ/Dev™ gives OEMs the tools to bring their own software features to life. Backed by Nexteer’s systems integration and expertise, OEMs can design and integrate their own steering and chassis control features in-house while adhering to industry standards and best practices.

Nexteer’s Motion-by-Wire portfolio, combined with our global, in-house ownership of software design, development, testing and validation, we are at the forefront of delivering the software-defined chassis and driving the next generation of intelligent, connected mobility.
