Celebrating 10 Years of Intuitive Motion Control Leadership

October 14, 2020

In 2010, everything changed for us – we went from a small division within a larger company to a stand-alone entity. This change opened new opportunities for our company and our people – enabling us to grow the business and advance our expertise while still staying true to our history of resilience, innovation and a commitment to thinking beyond boundaries.

So, as we celebrate our 10th anniversary of the Nexteer Automotive brand, we’re looking back on a decade of significant change in our history, as well as the automotive industry. We’re also looking ahead to the exciting future of mobility – and to the continued role we will play in intuitive motion control leadership.

A History & Future of Intuitive Motion Control Leadership

Long before the Nexteer brand, our initial roots in steering technology were established more than 110 years ago. Throughout our history, we have dedicated ourselves to providing innovative solutions for steering and driveline that make driving safer, more fuel-efficient and fun for millions of drivers around the world.

The past 10 years have been particularly exciting for our team with numerous highlights including:

  • Growing our core steering and driveline business and becoming the #1 Electric Power Steering (EPS) supplier in North America and #1 Rack-Assist EPS supplier globally
  • Demonstrating our technology leadership by unveiling our comprehensive suite of advanced steering technology centered around Steer-by-Wire
  • Creating our joint venture, CNXMotion, with Continental to focus on the advancement of motion control systems and actuator components for automated driving
  • Adding new customers to our portfolio – bringing our number of global customers to more than 60

Looking to the future, while our dedication to steering and driveline leadership remains, our diverse team and cutting-edge technology continues to adapt with the megatrends shaping our industry. Intuitive motion control plays a critical role in automotive electrification, connectivity, new and shared mobility and automated driving, among others. This is why we have expanded research and development efforts and why we proactively collaborate with customers and other industry leaders to address specific issues facing the future of our industry, especially in the post-COVID-19 world.

A Culture of Relentless Innovation

Significant changes in the automotive industry are nothing new to Nexteer. One of the largest shifts in our company’s lifetime was leading the transition from hydraulic power steering (HPS) to electric power steering (EPS). This change from a mechanical to electric system helped bring fuel efficiency, advanced safety features and ADAS and automated driving enabling technology to automakers and drivers around the world. We’ve seen this technology sweep the industry and become the heart of vehicles’ personality and performance.

The driving force behind our ability to adapt – and thrive – with the rapidly changing automotive industry is our “One Nexteer” culture. Placing communication and collaboration front and center, One Nex

teer is based on the themes of people, operational excellence and profitable growth for our team, our customers, our suppliers and our surrounding communities.

Our culture empowers and inspires our team to go above and beyond, whether that means taking the next step in advanced steering technology or using our manufacturing prowess to support our local communities with face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. At its core, our One Nexteer culture is built on making tomorrow better than today.

It is during historic moments like this that remind me how an innovation-driven organization can continue to make an impact in our world. As we look back at a decade of automotive excellence and a rapidly changing future, I am excited to see where our intuitive motion control leadership will take both our company and our industry.
